The Outer Journey
Roots, Rocks, and Roads Less Taken
Some roads tell you exactly where they lead.
The interesting ones don't always bother.
Roots, Rocks, and Roads Less Taken was created for the pull toward the route that isn't perfectly paved, perfectly planned, or necessarily the easiest way through.
It's for getting outside, exploring farther, meeting the obstacle when it appears, and discovering that sometimes the road worth remembering is the one that makes you work for it.
Because adventure isn't always found at the destination.
Sometimes it's hiding in everything that tried to keep you from getting there.
The Story
There is something different about leaving the predictable road behind.
The terrain changes.
The pace changes.
And suddenly you're paying attention differently.
A rock isn't just a rock anymore. It's a line to choose.
A washed-out section becomes a problem to solve.
A wrong turn becomes a story.
And getting stuck?
Well... sometimes that's where the adventure actually starts.
Roots, Rocks, and Roads Less Taken was built around that relationship between exploration and obstacle.
The goal isn't to pretend the difficult route is always better. It's recognizing that when we choose to venture beyond what's familiar, we're inevitably going to encounter things we couldn't plan for.
We adapt.
We learn.
We ask for help when we need it.
We pull someone else out when they need it.
And somewhere between where we started and where we finally end up, the journey becomes ours.
The Artwork
The front design turns the journey into a symbol.
A winding trail moves between two location markers, passing mountains and evergreen trees beneath the words “Roots, Rocks, and Roads Less Taken.”
It's part trail map, part compass, and part reminder that the space between two points can matter just as much as either destination.
The back expands that symbol into a full landscape.
A Jeep climbs across rugged rock beneath towering mountain peaks, surrounded by a dense forest rendered in layered black, grey, and white. The monochromatic palette gives the artwork a weathered, almost field-journal quality while allowing the vehicle, terrain, and mountain to become part of one continuous scene.
Above and below it:
Roots, Rocks, and Roads Less Taken.
Not simply a destination.
A way of getting there.
Beyond the Map
Some of the best parts of a journey never appear on the route.
The unexpected overlook.
The trail that turned out harder than expected.
The friend who spotted your line.
The stranger who helped with a recovery.
The moment everyone starts laughing because whatever carefully constructed plan existed twenty minutes ago is officially useless.
Those things don't show up on a map.
But they're often what comes home with us.
Outer Journey is about more than collecting destinations.
It's about collecting the moments between them.
Artist's Echo
I've learned that some of my favorite memories aren't from the moments when everything went according to plan.
They're from the obstacles.
The times we had to stop and figure something out.
The moments when the terrain demanded patience instead of horsepower.
The times someone needed help, or we did.
There's something about being outside that strips away a lot of unnecessary noise. You're looking at the trail in front of you. You're figuring out the next move. You're breathing different air. And for a little while, whatever was waiting back home can simply wait.
That's part of what Roots, Rocks, and Roads Less Taken means to me.
I love the destination.
But I also love everything the road asks of us before we get there.
The problem-solving.
The friendships.
The ridiculous stories.
The occasional use of a winch because apparently the chosen line was more ambitious than advertised.
And that moment when you finally look back at what you crossed and think:
Yeah. I'd take that road again.
